I have heard several people lately who have been wondering if MobileMe is worth $100 a year. My response is that I don’t think it is, but I think it’s worth $70/year, which is about what you’ll pay if you buy MobileMe at Amazon.com.
If you use the MobileMe Family Pack, you can buy the MobileMe Family Pack at Amazon for $100 instead of buying it from Apple for $150 per year.
How this works: Amazon will mail you a box with a piece of paper inside which has a registration code for MobileMe. Once you get it, login to your MobileMe account and enter in the code. VoilĂ ! This is exactly the same as renewing your MobileMe account through Apple; you will not have to change your MobileMe email address or anything else.
(This will also work if you are a new MobileMe user. Apple offers MobileMe at this price when you buy a new computer, iPhone, or iPad, but only if you buy it at the same time.)
Tip: MobileMe would really really like you to give them a credit card number so they can automatically renew your MobileMe subscription every year. Don’t give them one. If you don’t, they will start reminding you to renew about 60 days before your MobileMe subscription expires, at which time you can go back to Amazon and do this again.
At $70/year, I consider MobileMe to be slightly overpriced instead of way overpriced, but it works more reliably (in my experience) than trying to sync calendars/contacts to Google and is easier to set up and maintain. A few years ago MobileMe was prone to a lot of problems, but it’s been fairly reliable for me for the past two years, syncing 3 computers, 2 iPhones, and now an iPad. And there’s still no other way to use “Find My iPhone (or iPad)” without MobileMe.
A note about the Amazon links above: the links above are affiliate links. They don’t help me, they help a friend of mine who really needs it (you can read more about his situation here). It costs you nothing to use those links. The prices are exactly the same as if they were not affiliate links, but by using those links to buy, you help someone else. For free. I don’t feel badly asking folks to use a referral link that will save them $30-$50/year on MobileMe. If this bothers you, feel free to search Amazon for MobileMe on your own.
