How do I search for this on the Internet?

Google is great for lots of things, but I haven’t been able to figure out a reliable way to search for certain things.

  1. Imagine I’m driving from Chicago to Boston. It’s easy enough for me to figure out the route to take and how far it is: but what if I decide that I want to stop about half-way there. How do I calculate that? What if I decide I want to break the trip up into 3 roughly-equal “chunks” - where should I stop?

  2. Imagine that I live in Washington, DC. I feel like taking a car trip, but I’m not sure where to go. I don’t want to drive more than 6 hours to get where I’m going. What major cities can I make it to in that amount of time? (similar question, but instead of “6 hours” I say that I don’t want to drive any more than 500 miles each way)

  3. If I drew a line from Boston to 1,000 miles away, where would I end up?

Neither Google nor WolframAlpha were any help to me on these queries. How would you figure them out?

  1. electronsbro answered: Not sure, but I do recall you can suggest features for Google Maps.
  2. smartgoat reblogged this from luoma and added:
point, http://www.mezzoman.com would work. For mileage radius you could use...
  3. mathcat345 answered: Pencil, ruler, map - circle with radius 500 miles will let you see cities; line from Chicago to Boston - divide for stopping points; etc. ???
