I wanted to have shortcuts to my Gmail and Google Apps accounts on my iPhone to show me all of the unread messages and my starred messages.
My attempts to make links to them with fruitless until I figured out the exact URL that I had to use, and that the URL was different on my iPhone than on a desktop computer.
Note that %3A is the encoding for a colon : and I should probably have used that in the iPhone URLs but they work just fine as-is.
GMail
Starred on Desktop:
https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#search/is%3AstarredStarred on iPhone:
https://mail.google.com/mail/mu/#tl/search/is:starredUnread on Desktop:
https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#search/is%3AunreadUnread on iPhone:
https://mail.google.com/mail/mu/#tl/search/is:unread
Google Apps for Your Domain
Replace example.com with your Google Apps domain.
Unread on Desktop
https://mail.google.com/a/example.com/#search/is%3AunreadUnread on iPhone
https://mail.google.com/a/mu/example.com/#tl/search/is:unreadStarred on Desktop
https://mail.google.com/a/example.com/#search/is%3AstarredStarred on iPhone
https://mail.google.com/a/mu/example.com/#tl/search/is:starred
Once you have the URL open, tap the “+” and “Add to Home Screen” to save shortcuts.
UPDATE: Even with the proper URLs, this doesn’t seem to work consistently. Mobile Safari seems to insist on redirecting you to the Inbox.
