Best Comment of 2010

2010 continued the trend of 98% of most comments being completely worthless, but by far my favorite was this:

Just shoot me if I ever write a blog post on how to save $20 a month on a cell phone bill.

That was written in response to an article I wrote about giving up my iPhone where I was intentionally being very cautious about estimating how much I’d save.

I ended the original article by saying:

The savings may be modest, but this way we are saving $10-$20 per month instead of increasing our spending by $25/month. Practically speaking, we’re saving about $45/month, maybe more.

In fact, we ended up saving about $100 a month. That was done not only by canceling my iPhone, but also our SMS packages and getting rid of some bogus charges that had been added to our bill.

You could argue that I should subtract $25 for the iPad 3G data, but I was going to add that cost per month anyway, so I consider that moot. In another month or so we will have saved enough money to offset the purchase price of the iPad. In fact, if you take the $100/month against the $629 (purchase price of the iPad 3G) plus $300 for 12 months of 3G ($25 x 12), we will have saved the equivalent of the iPad somewhere around April or May of 2011.
